Research into Camera techniques (Movements, angles, composition)

Camera Movements :

The first movement is a Pan shot, its when the camera is aimed sideways along an axis, The camera is not physically moving into a new spot here, its just turning around. This shot is usually fixed and mostly done on a tripod. A smooth pan should be slow enough to allow the audience to observe the scenery. A fast pan will create blur. If it’s too fast, it will be called a Swish pan. This shot is used mostly to reveal something or to follow an object that might be moving in the same direction as the pan is.

The second shot is a tilt shot. this involves tilting the camera up and down, this shot is mostly used to reveal a certain object like a building or a person.

The is a dolly shot, this means that the entire camera is shifted forwards or backwards (Dolly

in and Dolly out respectively). Dolly shots are used for recording a subject that is either moving towards or away from the camera.

A Track shot is similar to dolly but not exactly, in a track shot, the camera would move parallel to the object.

A pedestal shot would be a camera moving up and down according to a certain movement of the actor/ object.

A zoom shot would also be considered as a camera movement although the camera is not actually physically moving anywhere, its just triggered by a lens or a button on the camera, the thing to note is that on most lens, zooming would mean also changing the aperture and focal length of the shot.

Camera shots :

A camera shot is the amount of space covered in a singe shot. They are used to demonstrate the difference sides of a certain character or an object.

An extreme long shot would cover a large amount of a certain landscape. its mostly used to establish a certain scene.

A long shot would contain a landscape but gives the viewer an idea of hat actually is going on.

A full shot would show the full character , this illustrates the costume of the certain character or even the relationship between two characters.

Mid shot would have a character with some background showing and would include the character only from the waist up.

A close up shot would only focus on a certain body part or an element in the shot for example the face (To show expressions) or the hand (to show maybe if the character is holding something ) of a certain character.

The extreme close up shot focuses on only on element in the scene for example on eye or the characters lips.

Camera Angles.

The first angle is the birds eye view, mostly used to establish a shot, this is taken either from a really high crane or from a drone in the sky.

The second angle is a high angle, it looks down on a character or a scene, this might be used to show the superiority of the audience over the character.

The third angle is a low angle, it looks up on a character or a scene, this might be used to show the inferiority of the audience relative to the character.

Another one would be the eye level angle which puts the audience on an equal level as the character.

A Dutch angle is used to demonstrate the confusion of a character. Its a slightly tilted shot that is supposed to disorientate the audience.

In a music video, The movements usually have to be very smooth so that i matches the aesthetic of the soundtrack. In a documentary, most of the movements can be very static although some cinematic footage is used for cutaways and as B-Rolls
