Introduction to Media Studies (9607).
At first, i had no idea about what this course is or what elements it has. I decided to look at the official Cambridge University website and I found a syllabus guide for Media Studies 9607. After taking a look at that document, i learnt that in AS-level, we only have two papers, one being the theory and the other one being the Practical paper.
The practical paper, Component 1 is a foundation portfolio meaning it would start the portfolio. In this component, we have a choice of either making a 2 page magazine or a 2 minute film opening task.
Theory based paper has 2 further sections, First one is a textual analysis which consists of a small film / show clip which we have to analyze in terms of Camera shots, angles, composition, sound, editing and mise en scene of the scene. Second section consists of research about films and their institutions (AKA the makers) and the Audiences(AKA the consumers) of the films.
Talking about the marking,
The first component is a group work which consists of people working together to produce a Film opening sequence or a magazine that is internally assessed by the teachers at the institutions and externally moderated by an examiner allotted by CAIE. The second component is a text based exam and its checked externally. Both of these components have a 50% weighting and have a 100 marks each.
In this blog we are going to be talking about magazine only. The reason for that is that i chose to make a magazine over a film opening sequence.
